The best portable audio recorder & audio interface combo with powerful mic preamp
This is truly the best portable audio recorder & audio interface combo you can buy, with excellent quality and features. I have used a few lower cost audio recorders (Tascam DR-60D MK II, Zoom H1n), as well as audio interface like Motu M2. The MixPre 3 easily beats all of them, and at the refurbished or used price, it is a great value too. Main pros: 1) Clean mic preamp with plenty of gain: this is especially important to drive dynamic mic like Shure SM7B. With MixPre, you will not need CloudLifter or FetHed. Most audio recorders, audio interfaces, or mixers will have enough gain. 2) Surprisingly small and compact for field use. Lots of power options: 4x AA batteries, Sony NPF, USB. 3) Very simple to use if you start with Basic mode, but super powerful with tons of pro features if you later go into Advanced mode. I knew what I was signing up for
It definitely is very limited but a powerful little mixer. More adept to studio Studio work. It wouldn’t last two weeks in the field with a news crew. The USB power connection is flimsy and I’m sure it will be going back to be replaced at some point.
