A Fantastic entry-level VR Headset that works with many SteamVR titles
The Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset is a VR headset made for use with Windows Mixed Reality, but can be used for games on SteamVR, OpenVR compatible titles, and more through advanced side-loading apps like "Revive". Though this headset doesn't come with base stations, like most of the popular headsets on the market today, this headset tracks your Controllers in an "Inside-out" manner, utilizing the front facing cameras on the Head Mounted Display. After a lot of time playing games with this headset, I can fairly say that the tracking isn't 100% always accurate, but it does do what other headsets do, while remaining cheaper and more portable. The set-up was quick and easy; Just pop on the headset, and a Windows logo appears. The WMR portal sends a screen to your headset telling you to look left to right and at the floor, so that the sensors can map out the space you have. The process is maybe 30 seconds long, and if you use the same space, sometimes you don't have to re-calibrate it.
As for the FoV: You do notice that you're wearing a headset, simply put. Your peripherals won't be as wide as if you were wearing an expensive headset, but the "goggle effect" is small and if you're not okay with a small lack in your outermost peripheral vision, you may not appreciate it. The headset is light, however, so it's very comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and you can easily adjust the focus points through the Windows Mixed Reality portal. I don't wear glasses, so I'm not sure if glasses are viable with this headset or not.
The motion on the controllers is crisp and quick. Windows Mixed Reality in general has problems occasionally with the tracking, but the lighting in your play-space and battery power may have a bit to do with it. Use 1.5v AA special chargeable chargable batteries if possible, or use single use 1.5v's. The lights on the controller are also a neat aesthetics to the Windows Mixed reality branch, and I think you'll find that they're comfortable and lightweight enough to hold for long periods.
The headset is not an oculus rift, HTC or Valve index, and Windows mixed reality will never truly hold up to their standards, but if you have lower funding like myself and still want to play your favorite Virtual reality titles: The line of Mixed reality headsets (and acer specifically) are a very good choice to get started, given you are alright with settling for "great", while the more expensive headsets are "Astonishing".
This headset is also leaps and bounds ahead of Gear VR, Daydream, and other forms of Phone-to-face VR headsets, and having two touch controllers is far better than one. If you want a genuine PC VR experience and can't afford oculus? Try Mixed reality to hold you over until then. Cheers.
