  • Great value for money!

I needed a SatNav to use on my classic motorcycle rather than borrowing the Garmin Nuvi 3597 from the car. The motorbike is 6v so I hoped to be able to run this device from a battery pack, as I had been doing with the Garmin. Yes, this gizmo is happy with that power source! In the box was a UK power supply to USB Mini plug lead, a cigarette lighter socket plug to USB Mini plug lead, a USB standard to USB Mini lead for use with a PC, a cloth bag to keep the gizmo safe, a set of bud earphones and a windscreen mount. The device comes with a stylus that lives in a hole in the corner. You do not have to use the stylus, any pointy thing will work, including a finger nail. The Garmin is touch sensitive, this device is point sensitive. If you plug the device into a PC you are able to see all the files and just copy them to make a back up - simple! This device fits into my existing handlebar mounted waterproof GPS holder. The screen is a bit smaller than the Garmin at 4 1/4" diagonal; the Garmin is 5" diagonally. The interface looks cheaper than the Garmin but this device costs at least a quarter of the price of the Garmin so not a problem! Screen is not glass so may, (will) show signs of wear eventually. This device is running on Windows CE operating system. It boots very quickly. European maps are already loaded so no need to buy an SD card, (as I had to do with the more expensive Garmin!) I have had the device lock up while changing settings twice since getting it but the provided stylus has a pointy end that goes into a small hole on the back to reset the device. Very quick reboot and the destination was remembered and route reloaded. There are many settings to play with including displaying my current speed but I would like to see that displayed a little larger, (I'm 67 and my eyes are not as good these days). There is an option to make the voice let me know if I'm exceeding the local speed limits. Big Plus from the Garmin, especially on a motorcycle is an earphone socket. This means I could just listen to the voice guide on the earphones and keep the GPS in my pocket. This could also be very useful when pedestrian mode is selected. I've only had this item for a few days but so far it seems to be excellent value for money. I have not yet tried any of the other advertised functions, such as games or playing music or connecting to the car radio.

  • Tom Car GPS Sat Nav

I bought this Sat Nav for my husband, thinking that though this was inexpensive it would be adequate for his needs, as long as it was easy to use. Unfortunately we have found it very slow to program. The instruction leaflet is useless and the route choice is difficult to find. The icons and layout are clear enough but you have to allow plenty of time to set your destination and program it before driving off. It seems to have no clear instruction of when to actually set off. There is no 'Go' arrow to tap. So when you select postcode, city, or street address you can't proceed. It then goes back to select City again, or numerous choice of addresses, none of which might be the one you want! Very frustrating, but once you eventually do find the postcode or street you want and if/when it eventually does give you the option to proceed, you set off on your way and it works perfectly well, with clear voice instruction. A rather odd sequence in order to proceed on your journey and such a time-consuming exercise makes this more than a little irritating, but when it works, you can feel happier with it. OK, but wouldn't recommend as ideal, other than good price!

  • Exceeded all expectations

I am a new driver and wanted a good value satnav for my car. When i bought this i wasn't sure how good it would be because of the low price tag but this device is excellent! It comes with 2 chargers so you can charge it on the mains as well as have it plugged into the cigarette lighter in the car. The device starts up quickly. The first time you start it you will need to be an an open space outdoors so it can configure itself with the satellites which took a few minutes, but after that it will pinpoint you on the map immediatly. The battery life was about an hour or so when i didnt have it plugged in to the cigarette lighter. It has loads of other features i'm still looking through such as games, FM radio, ebook reader, storage for videos photos and music etc. All in all it is well worth the price tag and i dont see why you would want to spend £100+ on a branded satnav when this does all the same things.

  • Not a Tom Tom, but different, and it works!

The unit worked fine driving recently from Calais to Soldeu in Andorra, and back. Very happy with the speed limit warnings, once you set these to visual only. The unit is sometimes a little temperamental when you turn the car off before the unit and it is running on battery, but as long as you reset the unit using the inbuilt pointer / wand then all is fine. The unit did not like being plugged into the car using the usb cable into a cigarette socket to USB converter, but was perfectly ok using the cigarette lighter style specific charger. Looking forward to many more trips abroad using the device, will need to check how easy map updates are to download. Manual gives little or no information about the navigation side, but it is pretty much intuitive. Many Thanks Ray

  • Great little sat nav

My previous sat Nav was a Tom Tom but I'm a bit skint so went for this cheaper one. I have used it for a week and am very happy with it. I didn't read the instructions but still found it easy to use. I haven't used any of the other features, but then didn't buy it for those. The map screen is clear and easy to see, the voice gives plenty of notice of turnings, i.e turn right in 1000 feet, although a couple of times I was on the turning as it gave the final reminder, but my tom tom did that too. The battery lasts well, there is a stylus tucked into a corner, which is easier to use than my chunky fingers! The voice tells you if you have gone over the speed limit, even by 1 mph, a feature I particularly like. I am very happy with this satnav and would buy it again.

  • Does the job and great value!

I bought this simply to use as a satnav so although it does have other functions, games etc. I have not used them. As a satnav this does what it says on the tin, very accurate, warns me if I am exceeding the speed limit etc. You have to be very firm when entering details on to the touch screen as it is not very sensitive (hence not 5 stars). This makes it a bit slow to use to start with but once the information is in there and saved, this is an excellent, affordable tool which works as well as any of my friends' much more expensive satnavs!

  • One or two alarming quirks

I suspect I'm one of many who didn't read the description carefully and assumed it was an outmoded TomTom. Of course it is nothing of the sort. It was cheap - and it shows. To be fair, I used the sat nav for the first time when in Ireland - but it's performance was patchy and sometimes incomprehensible. A journey from Cavan to Cavan Burren (a tourist attraction) should have taken 58 minutes. It took one hour 40 as we were endlessly turned back on ourselves sometimes down dead ends. To locate Main St in Bundoran (much where you might suppose, right in the centre of a very small town) we had to resort to a mapbook. The sat nav was fixated on a Main St in a village 18 miles from Bundoran. These were only two of a number of perplexing idiosyncrasies - the final straw was when it froze and refused to turn off at Dublin Airport - causing consternation at security as it beeped away. I have yet to use it in the UK - I'm waiting till a I have a couple of hours to spare if it is equally perplexing here. Better avoided.

  • Great value for price

Its good for the money but you cant update from naviextras site as they dont support this model and the instructions on how to update are very vague (ie. none). It does crash quite a lot when using for multiple addresses and have to power off to reset. Support from supplier is quite good but still no instructrions on where or how to update.

  • Sat nav

It does what it say on the tin but I have a couple of problems with it the cradle that the Sat nav sits in will only fit on to the bracket that sticks to your window if you brake off the 4 raised plastic lugs and I have only had it since the 6th of February and it has frozen 3 times and have had to reset it but when it's working it's ok and it up dates quickly when you change direction I wasn't expecting anything amazing from it only paid £33 for I also like that you can charge it in the house before you set off on a journey

  • Get what you pay for.

It looked nice was easy to read and had lots of extras unfortunately it packed up after just a month kept needing resetting and now won't turn on. Customer services were very nice but I can't ring them every time I need to drive somewhere. Disappointed.
