The Lenovo ThinkPad T440 14-inch notebook sets the benchmark for business-class laptops. During Mil-SPEC 810G standards trials, the ThinkPad T440s undergoes a host of durability tests – such as repeated eight-point drops, dust infiltration, and weighted impact – to ensure it won’t fail during a lifespan of normal and not-so-normal use. With a high-performance Intel Core i7-4600U processor, 10-point FHD touchscreen, a 512 GB Solid State Drive (SSD) and dual batteries, the ThinkPad T440 meets and exceeds the needs of any business. The regulation testing required to meet MIL-SPEC 810G standards enacts everything you could do to damage your Lenovo ThinkPad during normal use and multiplies it by ten. The tests the ThinkPad must survive unscathed include an auto-robot test using force to open and close the screen, wiggling connected cables and cords out of their ports, and aggressively pressing keys thousands of times. An eight-point drop test that dumps an open and running T440 from desk-height onto the floor. A dust-infiltration test that sprays a composite of dust collected from six different countries over, on, and into, a running T440. Plus, it endures an impact test that drops heavy metal balls from over three feet onto a closed T440. The ThinkPad must also pass an endurance test comprising 240 continuous hours of simulated computing to earn the MIL-SPEC 810G certification. The laptop chassis consists of a magnesium alloy base, carbon fiber base, and carbon fiber keyboard deck. Lenovo sets the highest bar for typing comfort, and the ThinkPad T440s offers nothing less than keyboard bliss. Optimal key spacing, three backlight settings, and a satisfying "punchiness" with each keystroke makes the ThinkPad’s spill-resistant keyboard a pleasure with which to work. The keyboard’s perfectly placed red TrackPoint pointing stick provides superb cursor precision, and its 3.9-by-2.75-inch buttonless touchpad allows for gestures common to touchscreens, such as four-finger swipe to minimize apps, pinch-to-zoom, and rotate. The ThinkPad T440s laptop’s 10-point touchscreen has a 1920 by 1080p resolution and 294-lux rating, making the screen just as viewable outdoors as in. In-Plane-Switching (IPS) technology improves pixel cohesiveness, creates realistic color grading, and allows viewing the display at almost any angle without distortion. An integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 card drives the T440’s graphics, audio, and video. Two batteries power the ThinkPad T4400s when disconnected from a power source: a six-cell 72-hour-watt external battery and a non-removable three-cell internal battery. When the exterior battery drains out, the interior battery takes over to give you time to connect the power supply or hot swap the exterior battery for a charged battery. The six-cell exterior battery lasts 14 hours and 36 minutes, one of the longest durations for laptops in general, not just an Ultrabook. The ThinkPad T440s has 8 GB of installed RAM, expandable to 12 GB with a 4 GB SO-DIMM 204-pin memory module. The 2.1 gigahertz (3.3 gigahertz with turbo boost) Intel i7 4600U provides 4 MB of buffer memory. The T440’s 512 GB SSD, made by Opal, combines the superior speed of SSD with the high capacity of a hard disk drive (HDD) without taking the ThinkPad out of the typical market price point for business-class laptops. The T440’s ports, expansion slots, and interfaces include three USB 3.0 ports, one MiniDisplay port, one LAN connector, one VGA port, and one 4-in-1 card reader. Terrific Product - with one issue
This laptop is terrific. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 as dual boot with the existing Windows 7. The process was fast and easy. The one problem I am having is with WiFi under both OSs. Connection is intermittent at best. After searching I found that this is a common problem with not only this model, but all Lenovo laptops. I am still seeking a solution. Excellent Laptop
Pros fast, lightweight, excellent screen, great battery life (even better with windows 10), excellent boot time, Cons not a touch screen, fingerprint magnet, horrible track pad, Lenovo bloatware, small SSD.
