  • A classic, well made knife of good general utility.

I used these growing up, so I'm a little partial to them. Generally they are well balanced knives, with blades that hold an edge pretty well. These knives are durable, and comfortable to use in any application. The holsters are solid, and the whetstones are functional, if small. For the price, they work well, although there are no chambers in the pommel as you may remember from older models or similar designs, so you'll have to keep your fishing line, matches, or miniature compasses elsewhere. Not the BEST knives for self defense, or throwing, IMHO, but, again, wonderful for producing kindling, building an emergency shelter, cutting yourself free of entanglement, etc. I wouldn't try to fillet a fish with one, but you could really lash this down and make a decent spear. The leather handles are very sympathetic to the hands, and won't slip when water-logged.

  • Excellent Air Force survival knife!

I have a few of these and Ontario is by far the best quality survival knife made. Good weight, durable leather handle, very sharp blade with special finish, great leather holster with metal reinforced critical areas, special holster with sharpening stone which will also fit on a utility belt and cord to strap to your leg. Great for any survivalist, military or Boy Scout in training to hunt, forage, build shelters, etc....I love them and keep one in the house, car and back packs.

  • Ontario Knife Company = Quality!

I have an appreciation for good quality knifes. This Ontario 499 Air Force Pilot Knife is a quality knife at a reasonable price. The workmanship on the knife is exceptional. The workmanship on the sheath is just as impressive. American quality at its best! If your looking for easy to carry, easy to conceal utility knife, this is it!

  • Good Value in a piece of American Military History. Knife arrived in decent shape, leather handle was slightly dry, though bees wax helped fix it.

Good Value in a piece of American Military History. Knife arrived in decent shape, leather handle was slightly dry, which caused the hilt to be a little loose, though bees wax soaked into the leather helped moisturize it causing things to tighten up. Sharp & ready to go.

  • Great knife The finish needs a little TLC but it'll be worth it!

Let's be totally honest... The black phosphate coating is way too thick for everyday use and looks UGLY! The leather handle is pretty rough. The retaining strap on mine seemed to have shrunk a bit and was very hard to snap around the handle. And the blade was not nearly sharp enough, right out of the box! Yet I'm giving the knife 5 stars and I said it was great. What gives? All of these are minor issues and the knife is only about $45! The first thing you'll want to do is get some 200, 400, and 1000 grit sand paper and do a little work on the the leather handle to smooth it down a bit. Start at 200, then move on to 400, and touch it up with 1000. It'll take all of five minutes. Next get some steel wool and lightly rub off that horrendous black phophate coating/paint! And then give the knife a few passes on a stone. That 1095 will get razor sharp. Now lightly oil the blade and get some leather conditioner on the handle and sheath. If you feel like darkening the handle or sheath you can just polish it up with some brown shoe polish. That will also add a layer of protection to the leather. In less than hour, you'll have turned a disappointing looking knife into a fantastic piece of cutlery that was a bargain at $45! If you want it looking that good coming out of Ontario then expect to pay a boat load more. These knives have always come needing some TLC. They initially began life as a survival knife for the US. Military. Their finish has always been iffy and that phosphate coating is super thick to protect the knife as it sits around collecting dust for years in anticipation of use. I'd rather spend 30 minutes doing minor clean up than pay a lot more the knife. As for the retaining strap, the leather stretches a little better when wet. Took about five minutes to get it to snap but now its a perfect fit! I've bought a couple of these over the years. This is the first time I encountered this problem.

  • Awesome all-purpose knife

This knife is a great general utility knife. It's a Jack-of-all-trades, master of none useful for a variety of tasks. I have two now and use one to chop wood into kindling. They hold a decent edge and are very sturdy. It has the classic look of the quintessential military survival knife with a ton of useful features and uses. Buy with confidence!!!

  • Best field knife on the market

I carried one of these in the '80's and '90's in the Army. Still have my original knife. I also own 2 others that I use in different jobs. Awesome knife / great value / great deal

  • The Best "All-Around" Survival Knife

For the price of a new one, compared to other high end brands, it's a winner .. Great for bushcraft, OKC has produced a solid blade that's easy to bring back to sharp .. Watch some YouTube comparison videos ..

  • Ontario Knife Co. 6150 Knife

Knife, scabbard and whetstone all appear to be of excellent quality. It will go in my EMT kit and hopefully never be used! I suspect it would perform quite satisfactorily if ever called upon to do so. My only disappointment with the knife lay in the advertising--it implies the knife is/was Air Force issue, however when it arrived neither knife nor scabbard was marked at all. No makers mark, no USAF association, not even "Made in USA' . Other than that the product looks and feels like it will do the job if called upon. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, solid utility knife.

  • Old school knife

This classic blade has been around for a long long time. Brought back old memories from FTX's in my youth. Take the time to coat the sheath and handle with Sno-Seal and you are GTG! All blades have limitations but this one can be stretched when you really need it.
