Great display with caveats
TLDR: I got the display for approximately €340 after discounts/mail in rebates. At that price I think it’s a great value for money and I can definitely recommend it (as long as you don’t intend to run G-Sync over standard DP since that doesn’t appear to be supported and only kind of works).
Packaging and content
I found the presentation excellent. Everything was held securely inside its own compartment. Quite important since my shipping box was damaged in transit, however, everything inside the ASUS box itself was safe.
Inside there was a HDMI to mini-HDMI cable, 10/18W USB-A charger, USB-A to USB-C adapter and a USB-C cable which can either be used for charging if the display is connected via the mini-HDMI port or for both video signal and power if it is connected to the USB-C source. There is even a printout from the factory calibration.
Build quality
The construction is completely plastic. It does feel like good quality plastic and there are no gaps or anything, but I would have preferred if it was a little sturdier. It does flex quite easily, and I would take extra care when transporting.
Ergonomics
All the ports are on the left side so the cables are nicely out of the way, at least if you are right-handed.
The kickstand is OK, it gets the job done but not more than that. The tripod, however, is absolutely worth paying extra for it in my opinion. Its extremely solid, compact and allows the display to be used at an optimal hight regardless of where you are set up.
Picture quality and OSD
I didn’t have a chance to run my Spyder Pro yet but subjectively the colours look good, the black levels are fine, and illumination seems quite uniform.
I have found the OSD quite intuitive, and it does offer quite a lot options. I would have wished if some of the options were better explained, like what does the “Vivid Pixel” or ACSR do and what is the difference between level 0 and level 5 OD, etc.
G-Sync support
And now we come to the problematic part. While the display is advertised as G-Sync compatible, it only natively supports G-Sync if the source is a USB-C with Alt DP. In other words, it rules out all of the gtx 1000 and earlier cards, as well as rtx 3000 series cards, with only some rtx 2000 seriers cards actually having a UBC-C port, i.e., it is primarily intended to be used with laptops and not with regular desktop cards.
However, G-Sync does sort of work with my GTX 1060 card using a bi-directional DP to USB-C cable, but it is very VERY glitchy. I will contact the ASUS support to see if the compatibility can be improved with different settings/drivers/cable.
