Product Information

The third installment in the series, Super Metroid for the Super NES once again puts you in the role of Samus Aran, a female bounty hunter. Your mortal enemies are the Metroids, which are quick to reproduce and can engulf living creatures and absorb their energy.

In the first game, Metroid for the NES, Galactic Federation researchers discovered a new form of airborne life on planet SR388. They dubbed these dangerous jellyfish-like creatures Metroids and captured a few for later study. Unfortunately, as the crew sped toward Galactic Federation Headquarters, space pirates attacked the vessel, stole the Metroids and took them to their home planet, Zebes. Soon the Mother Brain created an evil Metroid force. Samus's job was to eliminate the space pirates and destroy the Metroids.

In the sequel, Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy, Samus was sent to planet SR388 to make the Metroids extinct once and for all. Her final battle was against the Metroid Queen.

According to Super Metroid lore, after destroying the queen, Samus discovered a Metroid egg, which she procured and took with her to the Space Science Academy on the Galactic Federation Space Colony. Here scientists could examine the Metroid larva and understand its special organic structure. Naturally, those pesky Zebesian space pirates and their leader, Ridley, stole the larva and too it back to their rebuilt home planet. Samus promptly received an emergency directive from the Federation, ordering her to follow the pirates and save the hatchling. When she lands on Zebes, she finds that she must now take on an entire legion of space pirates as well as a new Metroid force.

The planet Zebes is made up of six huge sections: the surface area, which is under a constant deluge of rain, is called Crateria; Brinstar is a jungle area with a heavy maze of foliage; an underground water world called Maridia is full of killer crustaceans and ferocious fish; deep below the surface of the planet lies the unbearably hot Norfair; the remains of an astronaut crash comprises the Wrecked Ship; and Tourian is the control center for the space pirates and Mother Brain. Throughout the game, you must break down color-coded doorways that were designed to prevent intruders from roaming into restricted areas.

As you run, jump, spin, roll and shoot your way through twisted, threatening passageways of this game, you can fire upon Chozo Statues, which will reveal special items that will help you in your mission. You can collect missile tanks, power bombs, a grappling beam (which enables you to swing into certain areas), an x-ray scope (which allows you to see hidden passages) and energy tanks. When you destroy enemy creatures, they sometimes leave behind missiles and energy balls.

At the beginning of Super Metroid, Samus is equipped with a normal beam. You can increase her power by collecting the following enhanced beams: Ice, which freezes enemies for a short time; Wave, which sends out a charge in a wavy pattern; Spazer, which is a three-beam attack; and Plasma, the most powerful beam of all. Two special suits of armor, the Varia Suit and the Gravity Suit, are available for use. The former suit cuts damage from enemy attacks in half and allows you to explore in high-temperature areas while the latter reduces damage from attacks to one fourth and lets you explore freely in water-filled zones.

Special boot items you can find will help you reach higher places, jump continuously, fly through open areas and run at super high speed while invincible. Superpowers you can acquire for use in turning yourself into a living weapon include: morphing ball, bomb, spring ball and screw attack. The screw attack enables you to somersault into enemies and blast them into oblivion.

In addition to battling space pirates, you must face a barrage of freakish creatures and numerous traps. You'll ward off clawed Geruta, fireball-spitting dragons, cacti needle

  • A game that defined a genre

The third game in the Metroid series, Super Metroid was also third iteration on the formula that Metroid for the NES defined. Well the first was vast and almost completely none linear, and Samus Returns was entirely linear exploring each sector in sequence as they came up, Super Metroid has a defined path that one can break form if they are skilled enough. It encourages exploration of old locations and discovery of new paths. Criss crossing a cohesive map that makes the whole game a blast to play. This game serves as the foundation for which all future metroid-vania games would come. Graphically speaking the game is well polished a good example of what can be done with 16bits. The locations are all varied and the enemies have quite a few frames of animation giving them a sense of life. In addition the game play is tight and polished, allowing you to pull off some amazing feats with the later abilities you unlock. It is also approachable as Samus starts the game with a fairly limited move set and it gives you plenty of time to adapt and learn to what ever new ability you unlock before getting the next one. Much of the tutorialization is handled completely in game with graphical hints and nudges to help the player implicitly understand what to do with their new powers.

  • Great game. Addicting as heck.

This game is seriously awesome. Really hard, though. I didn't play Metroid on the NES, so this never made it into the collection. Definitely worth the purchase. In terms of quality of the product itself, it was perfect. No issues. In terms of the game, really good game. Jump mechanic is a little weird, but once you get used to it, this game will keep you occupied for a good while. Took me almost 11 hours to get through it the first time, and already re-played it once!

  • Works like New

Despite the game being about 29 years old, the cartridge works quite well. No dusting or cleaning needed. I just popped it right into my snes and it worked fine. My copy had a save file that was already started, but it wasn't very far in the game and probably just used to make sure the cartridge worked. Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if this was a reproduction cartridge with how nice it looks and how well it works. Gameplay is smooth as usual, and the Super Metroid game itself is nearly a masterpiece of snes gameplay.

  • Prompt delivery and great condition!

I found that the Japanese copies of Super Metroid (for the Super Famicom) are less expensive than the American carts, even though the software on both carts is completely identical, and both can be played in either Japanese or English. So I cut out the tabs on my Super Nintendo that stop Super Famicom games from fitting inside, and the Super Famicom version worked perfectly as expected. The Cartridge was not really yellowed at all as far as I could tell, and the label wasn't faded from UV exposure. The game itself held up beautifully. I'd never played Super Metroid before, so no nostalgia here. It has tight controls and an amazing story with great bosses and enemies. The graphics are the height of pixel art, with some neat effects which really show the capability of the SNES. So much so that it actually drops frames if there is enough happening on screen, which was very rare. It took me 8 hours to beat the game on my first try, so don't expect to blow through it in an hour just because it is an old game! Highly reccommend.

  • Awesome Truly Authentic Game!

I went ahead and looked at the hardware inside the cartridge. I even posted a reddit post about a chip that I had no idea if it was authentic or not. Turned out to be very authentic. I believe goldstar or lucky goldstar is a premature LG. They must have done some work on the cartridge for nintendo. I tested the cartridge. Looking forward to grinding it out on my SNES. Stunning game it looks like. I saw the intro screen it looked fascinating. Thanks!

  • Best. Game. Ever.

Super Metroid is the best game ever made. It has an incredibly high replay value and has aged impressively well in it's 27 year lifespan. The game is jam packed with exploration and action, I'd recommend it to anyone!

  • The Pinnacle of Metroidvania along with Symphony of the Night

Super Metroid is considered by some to be the greatest game ever made, while I wouldn't take it that far, for the SNES, there isn't many better. It's a top 3 SNES game for me with A Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger. It's essential for all retro game fans to play Super Metroid. Now stop reading this review already and go play it!

  • An old gem

The music, the layout of the map, and the everything in this game is one of the best old gems to own. There are many old games to compare, but this one set a standard to the upgrade process that continued throughout the series of Metroid. One great game to own and will forever be one of my favorite games on the SNES

  • Great Game

This game quickly became my favorite super nintendo game. It rekindled my love of the system. The gameplay is tight and rewarding but not too hard. If you're on the fence, I'd 100% recommend this.

  • Super Metroid Nostalgia!

I never owned this game back in the mid 90's always wanted to pick it up, but I could never find a good clean copy until now! Also had a snes dust cover with it, the icing on the cake!😆
