Very Good, But Also Lacking
The DVD itself was in very good condition and played flawlessly. I was a little disappointed with the presentation. I had read about Irena Sendler, and the story of how she smuggled children out of the ghetto in baggage cases and on her wagon; how she kept a dog at the back of her wagon, that was trained to bark when the children started fussing, to cover any noise. It sounded so fascinating; I was hoping to see how all this was done. Instead, it's a fairly swift summary of the underground network, with a few scenarios depicted in a few sentences. Quick changes of scenery and buildings, leave one a little lost as to where we are in time and place. There isn't time to reflect. I did appreciate a few details that I hadn't heard before, and of course Irena herself was delightful in the interview. Overall, I would have liked the authors to have spent more time on the stories (the DVD is less than an hour long). The dog was never even mentioned, and the only allusion to a cart was one in which they took children out to the dump under garbage. They often focused on how difficult it was for the children, and how some strongly resented their parents giving them up; since their identities were changed for security, some never knew who they really were, etc. Kind of a negative approach to things.
Irena was a lovely soul, but the DVD leaves me hungry to find out more about her, when it should have done that. It seemed they tried to skim through all the information -- there was far too much to cover in less than an hour.
