This is a semi-autobiographical picture of paternal anger and alcohol abuse from father Ray (a menacing and remarkable Ray Winstone), causing bouts of often unbearable tension and shocking domestic violence against his family. The son (Creed-Miles) is battling heroin while his weary resigned wife Valerie (Burke, in an incredible performance) tries to keep out of his way. A superb and cautionary tale of the downward spiral of self-destruction and tested loyalties, shot through with true humour. With a score by Eric Clapton and winner of the Best Actress award for Kathy Burke at the Cannes Film Festival.

Brutally realistic but perfectly cast and acted
I grew up in London SE6 and Gary Oldman in Deptford SE8. This is a very uncomfortable film and the film is far too realistic for comfort. The exteriors are all in my part of London, so I love it for that. Gary Oldman needed to make this very personal film, shooting it to be realistic. If you don't like physical and emotional brutality, then do not watch this. If you love powerful cinema which does not hold back from hard truths, then see Nil by Mouth.

Great Film.

The British need to stay away from film making !
Standard "gritty" London based drama with plenty of inarticulate working class characters relentlessly swearing at each other, loads of violence and almost no plot line whatsoever.The superb Kathy Burke and Ray Winstone clearly had empty diaries for this particular year, were heavily bribed or possibly blackmailed to act in this tedious film.

Living on the edge
Great acting from Ray Winston (you will hate him) & Kathy Burke, even if the subject matter is difficult to grasp, let alone watch. Nauseatingly boring at first but these lives pull you in as the characters develop & the day to day misery unfolds & concludes making the best of all they know. This almost unbelievable mess is like living on the edge of a crumbling cliff. It has to be the brilliant acting that makes you feel at the end...wow , what a story, even though it is the ugly side of human behaviour.
