Engaging in deadly battles with giant insectoid aliens is not on the schedules of most teenagers, but for Rico, Carmen and Carl, it is par for the course in this animated science fiction TV program. Having decided to enlist rather than stick around high school any longer, this trio of friends was determined to find exploration and adventure. Little did they know, the first interstellar war was about to erupt, and they would become members of the elite Roughnecks, led by Lieutenant Razak and sent to foreign planets to face the aliens on their own turf. Though armed to the teeth with an advanced anti-arthropod arsenal, they are menaced at every moment by the fearsome creatures, and meanwhile the kids must also deal with the difficulties of adolescence.

The Best Interpretation of Heinlein
Contains some spoilers. The Starship Troopers franchise has been plagued with movies that are either not bad on their own or are just plain horrible. However very few of them have actually captured the essence of the novel that they are based upon. This is predominantly due to Verhoeven never even reading the book. Roughnecks actually tries its best to be a good interpretation of the novel. In addition the ridiculously over-the-top politics and propaganda of the live-action films is gone. There is still some propaganda shown when it comes to the fednet broadcast talking about the progress of the war but this is mostly done to maintain morale back home because the war is not going well. The characters are far more interesting than their live-action counterparts and we do not see Johnny Rico become a hero just because he's lucky. There are characters you love and characters that are assholes. Even the episode where they introduced the cybernetic Trooper CHAS the character was well written & showed development. I still get chills whenever I watch him turn to the squad and yell "Roughnecks ho!" before his death. You experience the changes in the different characters as they grow throughout the series. You get to know them. Even the brief story about how Lieutenant Razak lost his hand is poignant. Definitely buy this if you are a fan of the franchise as it's meant to be. It will speak to you much more then those movies with that dbag Casper Van Dien. Although there's no Dizzy boobs. So if you want that it's not here heh.

I can't beleived I missed this.
It's retro, and a new experience for me, despite how dated it is, it gives me a more open universe on one of my favorite movies. Worth the money to finally watch.

Great show! Awful animation, but great show!
The show has well written and voice acted plot and characters, with an engaging storyline. Don't let the graphics fool you, the show is definitely worth a watch.

An original and much needed part of the series
The characters were explored in depth. There was all 8 movies in the boxed set. You got to watch the series right through. Plus 4 bonus episodes, mostly clip shows. An essential addition to collectors and fans sets in the Starship Troopers collection.

Its enjoyable and if you like Starship Troopers this should be nice for you.
In my eyes its a great in between for the movies and the book. Im not great with words when it comes to describing why its so enjoyable but if you like starship troopers. it shouldn't be too bad for you.

An great animated sci-fi series for all ages.
Roughnecks; Starship Troopers complete series DVDs was entertaining and kept you wondering what kind of bugs the troopers would run into next.
