Product Information

To succeed in solving the day-tripper mystery adventure Flower, Sun and Rain, players must try, try again. Assuming the identity of a young private detective, the player is hired to travel to a beautiful resort, called Losspass Island, and conduct an investigation for the Flower, Sun, and Rain Hotel there. A chaotic moment brings disaster to the island, but hero has a chance to stop it -- and he gets this chance again, each morning. The young detective finds himself repeating this same disastrous day over and over, each time with the opportunity to make different choices. Each time through the routine is an opportunity to delve deeper into the story. Equipped with a special briefcase for taking notes and operating electronic equipment and devices, the hero collects numerical codes that give access to new people and places, advancing the plot. The play of the game involves interacting with characters through text conversations, solving touch-screen puzzles and brain teasers, and strategically assembling all the collected elements into a bigger picture, to solve the mystery and save the island. The original edition of Flower, Sun and Rain, released in Japan for PlayStation 2, was created by eccentric game designer Goichi "Suda51" Suda, who later directed and developed the conspicuously unorthodox Killer7 and No More Heroes. The Nintendo DS version of Flower, Sun and Rain retains the story, presentation, and artistic style of the original, and adds touch-screen control in puzzle-solving sequences and other interfaces.

  • Niche As It Gets

If you’re looking to add this to your DS collection, chances are you’re either a fan of director Suda51 (like me) or a hardcore collector. Either way, what you get for your buck is a very ugly port of a cult PS2 classic that had previously never been released outside of Japan. The story, an unconventional and quirky affair in which “searcher” Sumio Mondo is tasked with investigating a bomb threat on scenic Lospass Island, is the only real reason to give Flower, Sun and Rain a shot. Gameplay consists of traversing the various locations on Lospass Island, solving puzzles and inputting the answer as a sequence number. It’s unique for sure, but since the solutions to the various puzzles are always the same on each play through, there’s very little to encourage replay value. A very specific game for a very specific type of person, anyone with a casual interest would be best off watching a video walkthrough instead.
