Best choice for a mid-range flatbed photo scanner
The Epson Perfection 4992 PHOTO flatbed scanner is an excellent mid-range scanner. There are a lot of low-end scanners out there. This scanner outperforms them. There are also high-end scanners that cost ten times or more than this one costs, but they are aimed at commercial uses that an amateur does not need to do. A few years ago I bought one of these for the archives department of an organization I worked for. It truly is capable of accurate archival quality reproduction. I bought this one to scan historical family photos and slides. Being a pre-owned scanner, it was missing the film holders. I found that I don't really need them. It isn't too hard to position the film by hand on the glass. There are several sellers of aftermarket non-Epson brand film holders, but I didn't feel they were worth the price. What I like: - good resolution. Practically speaking 1200 dpi is the top useful resolution, although you can select up to 4800dpi. Above 1200 you don't get much if any improvement in image quality, though. - fairly rapid. It only takes a few seconds to scan a large photo. Compared to my previous scanner, it's about 10 times faster. - scans both photos and transparencies (slides and negatives). It automatically converts negatives to positive images, both color and black & white. - scans multiple images in one pass. You can put several prints or transparencies on the glass, do a preview scan, and then outline the parts that you want scanned by holding down Ctrl and dragging the cursor from one corner to the other. When you click scan, it scans each selected area to a separate file. - Digital Ice software cleans up dust and scratches automatically, with excellent results. - the scan software is easy to use and logically presented. What I don't like: - Digital Ice is quite slow. It depends on the speed of your computer, but using Digital Ice on transparencies can make it take two or three times longer to do a scan. It scans a small portion, processes it, scans some more, etc until it's finished. It's really not worth the time it takes to use it on prints. But it is hard to get 35mm slides perfectly clean, so using Digital Ice is worth the time it takes. Just let it run. - Film scanning does not use the entire surface of the glass. You can't put film or slides all the way out to the sides. - If you don't have the film holders, it doesn't automatically find the areas of film to scan when you have multiple images, and you have to outline the scan areas by hand. I made a cardboard guide that lets me scan 12 35mm slides at once. The normal slide holder only has room for 8 slides. - 1200 dpi is a little low for film scanning. It would be nice if the higher resolutions produced better output. But realistically, most amateur slides and negatives don't have any more detail than that anyway.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht
