Perfection!
Back in 2007 during the format wars of HD DVD vs Blu Ray, Samsung introduced this dual format player at a price of $1,000. During this time period most all reviews of this machine were excellent, but I felt the price was a little high. So, to find this player on ebay all these years later was a surprise. I was a little afraid because of recent user reviews saying it would not play current blu rays, cdrs, dvdrs, and various other problems. I believe most of these problems are players that have not been updated with latest firmware (version 1.7 available at Samsung support). After performing this firmware update I have been able to play all my older and newer blu rays, HD DVD, CDs, CDrs, DVDs, DVDrs. Also the upconversion quality of standard DVDs is near the quality of Blu Ray or HD DVD. I realize this certainly isnt the latest greatest technology, but it was fun to find an older Blu Ray/HD DVD player at a reasonable price. HD 1080p HD-DVD player!
This is the Samsung BD-UP5000. I bought this player for the sole reason to watch HD-DVD's. I use a region free Sony BD player to watch Blu-ray. I bought this player used with accompanying HD-DVD's. They play awesome, very nice HD format here that probably should have been given a chance. It was easy to hook up, easy and functional remote, and all the menu's on board are easy to figure out. Many other HD-DVD players offered here can only do up to 1080i, so this model far exceeded the typical HD-DVD players offered. Full 1080p here. Does most sound formats too I'm watching one right now in DTS. It starts up surprisingly fast for being as old as it is too. You do need to manually set up your network connection for the LAN if you want to connect to the net for program content or any firmware updates. The manual is available on Samsung support. it was definitely worth the purchase. If you don't have all your modem info at hand, this firmware update from Samsung is MANDATORY. It eliminated the freezing problem I was having with certain HD-DVD's. All play perfect now. Samsung support offers it for download at their site, it is from 2013, and is just an iso file you burn to a CD and put in the player. Still a great player
I've been collecting HD-DVDs for the last few years and also having a large Blu-Ray collection it's nice that I don't need 2 players. Though it's 9 years old now and takes a very long time to boot up (well over a minute). Because of that it's showing its age. But with the latest firmware update it still plays the newest Blu-Rays out plus all HD-DVDs ever made I believe so. Doesn't play HD-DVD's which is why I bought it!
